Scala: The Coast's First Settlement

Scala predates Rome. Founded by shipwrecked Romans in the 4th century BC, it was the first settlement on this coast and once the most powerful town in the region. Today it faces Ravello across the Valley of the Dragon, offering visitors an unchanged glimpse of medieval life without the crowds.

A Living Time Capsule

Unlike touristy Positano or polished Ravello, Scala remains authentically Italian. Elderly residents chat in dialect on stone benches. Chickens roam narrow alleys. Ancient churches stand unlocked. The pace hasn't changed in centuries—which is precisely the appeal.

The village is actually six scattered hamlets (frazioni): Scala Centro, Minuta, Pontone, Campidoglio, Santa Caterina, and San Pietro. Each has its own character and church.

What to See

Duomo di San Lorenzo: The 12th-century cathedral in Scala Centro, with Romanesque architecture and medieval art. Contains the tomb of the noble d'Afflitto family and beautiful Byzantine-influenced details.

Church of San Pietro (Campidoglio): Perched at the highest point with panoramic views. Ancient frescoes inside.

Pontone: This hamlet offers the best views of Villa Rufolo across the valley, plus the ruins of the Basilica di Sant'Eustachio.

Hiking from Scala

  • Scala to Ravello: 30-minute walk along ancient paths with stunning valley views
  • Valley of the Mills: Descend to ancient paper mills along the river
  • Scala to Minori: Scenic descent through lemon groves to the sea
  • Mountain trails: Paths climb to Monte dell'Avvocata and beyond
