Minori & Maiori: The Real Amalfi Coast

While tourists crowd Positano and cruise ships disgorge passengers into Amalfi, two neighboring towns continue life much as they have for generations. Minori and Maiori offer something increasingly rare on this famous coast: authenticity. Italian families on the beach. Nonnas doing daily shopping. Restaurants serving locals rather than guidebook-followers. These are the Amalfi Coast's real beach towns.

Minori: Taste of the Coast

Minori bills itself as the "City of Taste"—and earns it. This small town has produced several renowned pastry chefs, and the local specialty ndunderi (ricotta gnocchi) appears on menus throughout the region. The beach is family-friendly, the prices reasonable, the atmosphere genuinely Italian.

Roman Villa: Minori's archaeological treasure—a 1st-century Roman villa with remarkably preserved frescoes and mosaics. Evidence that Romans too appreciated this coastline's beauty.

The beach: Sandy, well-maintained, with good facilities. Italian families dominate; tourists are welcome but don't overwhelm. See beach guide.

Maiori: The Longest Beach

Maiori boasts the Amalfi Coast's longest beach—a significant distinction on this cliff-dominated coastline. The town itself is more modern than its neighbors (rebuilt after 1954 floods), but the beach life is authentic and the atmosphere relaxed.

Beach facilities: Multiple beach clubs, free sections, good for children. Space to spread out that Positano simply cannot offer.

Evening passeggiata: The seaside promenade comes alive each evening with locals walking, children playing, and the social ritual that defines Italian summer life.

From Ravello

Both towns are easily accessible from Ravello. A scenic walking path through lemon groves connects Ravello to Minori (about 40 minutes downhill). The return is more demanding, but buses run regularly.

Suggested day: Morning walk down to Minori. Beach time and lunch. Continue walking along the coast to Maiori (20 minutes). Evening passeggiata and dinner. Bus back to Amalfi or Ravello.
