Furore: The Village That Doesn't Exist

Furore calls itself "il paese che non c'è"—the village that doesn't exist. There's no central square, no cluster of buildings. Instead, houses scatter across the dramatic cliffs, connected by steep paths and stairs. What it lacks in conventional form, it makes up for with its extraordinary fjord beach and artist-painted murals covering every wall.

The Fiordo di Furore

The main attraction is spectacular: a narrow fjord where a mountain stream meets the sea, framed by towering cliffs and spanned by a dramatic bridge. The small beach at the fjord's mouth offers crystal-clear swimming in an almost surreal setting.

Accessing the Fjord: Park along the main road and descend steep stairs. Space is extremely limited—arrive early in summer or visit off-season. The annual cliff diving competition (Mediterranean High Diving Championship) attracts international athletes each July.

The Painted Village

In the 1980s, artists began painting murals on Furore's scattered buildings. Today, over 100 works cover walls, stairs, and doors. Themes include local life, mythology, and abstract art. The village has become an open-air gallery—wander freely to discover pieces around every corner.

Best areas for murals: Via Punta Tavola, the area around the church of Sant'Elia, and the paths descending toward the fjord.

Wine & Local Products

Furore produces its own DOC wine, grown on impossibly steep terraces. The local cantina offers tastings—call ahead to arrange. The white wines, made from indigenous grapes, pair perfectly with fresh seafood.

Local restaurants serve traditional dishes rarely found elsewhere: zucchini alla scapece, fresh anchovies, handmade pasta with wild herbs from the mountains above.
